MSC’s Next Ship Named Meraviglia; Will Have 3 Med. Homeports
In what MSC Cruises calls a key milestone in its $5.4 billion growth plan, the 1st steel has been cut for the debut vessel in the line’s Vista generation of megaships.
In a ceremony at STX France, MSC Executive Chairman Pierfrancesco Vago put a name to the 4,500 guest, 167,600-GRT ship — MSC Meraviglia.
Bookings will open this June, with delivery scheduled for May, 2017. MSC Meraviglia will spend her 1st summer sailing the western Mediterranean, and will be the 1st to have 3 homeports: Genoa, Marseille and Barcelona.
“MSC Meraviglia will be the biggest and most innovative cruise ship ever built by a global European-based cruise line,” saidVago. “Today, building started on a true maritime marvel.”
MSC Meraviglia is the 1st of 2 identical ships on order from STX France, the 2nd of which will enter service in 2019. MSC Cruises has options for 2 further Vista project ships to be delivered by 2022.
