Fun For Foodies: HAL Partners With America’s Test Kitchen

Open Jaw

Holland America Line President Orlando Ashford puts on the apron to celebrate a new partnership with PBS cooking show America's Test Kitchen.

Open Jaw was on hand in NYC yesterday as Holland America Line announced a partnership with PBS cooking show America's Test Kitchen to offer demonstrations and small group classes onboard.

The partnership will make its debut on Westerdam in mid-October, followed by Nieuw Amsterdam in mid-November. It will be expanded throughout the HAL fleet by June 2017.

The partnership will involve remodelling show kitchens on the ships - including the new Culinary Arts Center that debuted on Koningsdam.

The initiative will take 2 forms. There will be cooking demonstrations geared to groups of as many as 200 people, along with a selection of 12 classes for smaller groups of a dozen students. They will learn recipes, techniques and get information about the best quality kitchen tools.

HAL President Orlando Ashford told assembled media at the Institute of Culinary Education in Lower Manhattan that surveys have shown the line’s pax "love cooking, entertaining and learning about food."

The America's Test Kitchen brand extends beyond the 15 yr old PBS television show, also available on Netflix. The company owns the popular magazines "Cooks Illustrated" and "Cook's Science" as well as one of the leading subscription-based recipe websites.
