Meditating Portuguese Actor Scares Pax, Is Removed From Plane

How jumpy are air pax these days? Here’s a telling indication:

A Portuguese actor humming a prayer as he meditated to a sacred Tibetan text onboard a plane awaiting takeoff from ORY was mistaken for a terrorist by alarmed pax and removed from the flight by police.

"Police told me that I had been denounced as a terrorism suspect aboard the plane because I was reciting the Koran aloud, that I was reading a text involving words 'death' and 'bomb,'" Heitor Lourenco said in remarks aired by SIC television.

Lourenco, 47, said his text, which he was reading on a tablet device, contained Tibetan characters and the device had the timer on to tell him how long he had meditated, which may have triggered associations with a bomb.

Lourenco endured 6 hr. of questioning during which police watched videos of him on the Internet which proved he is a theatre and television actor. They also checked his profile on Wikipedia, which states that he is a Buddhist.

A spokesman for the airline confirmed that another pap had alerted the cabin crew of Lourenco’s ‘suspicious attitude in prayer,’ and that the crew followed standard procedures ‘given the current climate.’

France is currently operating on its highest level of alert for terrorism following deadly shooting attacks in and near PAR in January and the beheading of a French businessman last week in southeastern France.
