Welcome To Georgia! CDN Tourist Jailed For $75 Ticket

Things are not so peachy in the Peach State. Not only is their baseball team struggling to draw fans, they’re not very nice to the ones that make a huge effort to visit the state.

After travelling all the way from Saskatchewan with his nephew to watch the Blue Jays play the Braves, Canadian tourist Randy Kanuick got into a minor fender-bender on the way to the game.

What happened next has likely ensured that Kanuick won’t be venturing anywhere close to Atlanta anytime soon.

Police arrived at the scene, handcuffed Kanuick and took him off to jail, leaving his nephew behind. He was jailed for 6 hr. before receiving a USD75 ticket for “failing to maintain lane” after he tried to get around a delivery truck.

When Kanuck asked the police officer why he was being taken to jail, the officer told him it was because he is a foreigner and may leave the state without paying the fine.

To get out of jail, Kanuck posted a USD158 bond and paid the ticket as well.

According to the Atlanta Police Department, the rules state: “The purpose of arresting and requiring the posting of a bond by the traffic violator is to ensure an appearance of the violator in court when an officer has reason to believe an offender will not appear for his or her scheduled court date.”

Kanuck now says he may never return to Atlanta. It’s tough to blame him and we wonder how many other visitors have experienced similar incidents.

Responding to a story on the incident, one commenter wrote: “The guy’s watching TWO Braves games. Isn’t he suffering enough?”

PS: Isn’t Kanuick a great name for a Canadian?
