A bus driver
for India’s Jet Airways picked the wrong time to take a nap, falling asleep
behind the wheel shortly before crashing into an AI plane parked at Netaji
Subhash Chandra Bose International Airport in Kolkata.
was transporting two 9W crew members to their own departing flight when
the accident happened. The good news is that there were no injuries reported
and no pax were on the AI plane at the time.
India Today reports
that it took almost 100 hr. and 2 separate teams of engineers to remove the
bus, which was solidly jammed into the right side of the aircraft, causing what
was described as “extensive damage” to its wing, engine and landing gear.
“The plane’s right
rear wheel is gone, its landing gear is damaged and the front left corner of
the bus is lodged in the section of landing gear. The bus roof is stuck under
the wing and caught in the fuselage and engine,” said Airport Director A.K.
Sharman to The Times of India.
Two AI flights had
to be cancelled after the accident and there are concerns that the
aircraft may be damaged beyond repair.
General of Civil Aviation has ordered an investigation into the crash, as have
both airlines. Damage to the aircraft is estimated at more than $10 million.
