Purse Snatching Gets Couple Kicked Off Cruise, Far From Home

She just had to have that bag.

A Brazilian couple has been ordered off a Celebrity Solstice cruise in Dunedin, New Zealand after the alleged theft of a designer handbag from an onboard store.

Modern ships have plenty of security cameras aboard. After the bag was reported missing, a 59 yr. old female passenger was identified on camera in the act of taking it.

The theft of the Michael Kors bag, worth about USD 400, happened as Solstice was on its way to Port Chalmers from Fiordland, on New Zealand’s South Island.

Celebrity Solstice offers a newly opened Michael Kors signature store aboard, stocking handbags, clothing and accessories. That seems the likely point from which the bag was taken, rather than it being a passenger’s personal property, though details have yet to emerge.

Celebrity did not press charges, but the ship’s on-board security notified police as the ship came in to port. Police waited to interview the couple.

Celebrity says it is assisting the woman and her partner in arranging flights back to Brazil, the paper said, but the couple are likely to have to pay for it, and flying to Brazil from New Zealand does not come cheap.

“The onus is on them to make their own way home,” confirmed Senior Constable Tvrdeic of New Zealand Police, who interviewed the couple through a Portuguese interpreter. Tvrdeic described them as “distraught,” adding that the woman’s action had ruined the couple’s holiday.
