Footie-Mad: Iceland Fan Charters 737 To Travel To Match

Open Jaw

An Iceland soccer fan rented a Boeing 737 to get to yesterday’s storybook match with England. Gretar Sigfinnur Sigurdarson splashed out an estimated £140,000 to hire the jet.

He wrote on his Facebook page: "I have rented a plane for 180 passengers to Nice in France. It will be a return trip on the day. We leave early in the morning and return in the evening, just after the game.”

Friends and other fans kicked in £750 each to join Gretar. With Iceland’s unprecedented success at Euro 2016 it wasn’t a tough sell.

They were amply rewarded, as the side from a country with a population roughly the size of London,Ontario toppled mighty England (which has been having a crappy week all-round).

About 8,000 Iceland fans were expected to travel to the match.

Gretar might have to get his credit card out again, as the David and Goliath story continues Sunday when Iceland faces host country France.
