Are We There Yet? PE To Launch World’s Shortest International Flight

Open Jaw

A little-known Austrian airline is launching what is believed to be the shortest international flight. The short hop will cover just 20 km and is expected to take only 8 min.

People's Viennaline, which was founded in 2010 and flies to just 4 destinations, will fly from Friedrichshafen in Germany, to St Gallen-Altenrhein in Switzerland. For those seeking more airtime, the flight will then continue to Cologne.

Why would anyone fly between Friedrichshafen and St Gallen-Altenrhein? It’s not as crazy as it sounds. The 2 cities are separated by Lake Constance so although they are only 20 km apart as the crow flies, the journey by land is about 65 km.

The twice daily service will launch 02NOV.

The news comes shorlty after Greater Toronto Airways began offering daily 12 min. flights from YTZ to Niagara-on-the-Lake’s YCM. Again, the distance is short, but since pax will likely be looking down at a traffic jam, it makes good sense.

At the other end of the flight distance scale, EK recently surpassed QF with an over 14,000 km routing between DXB and AKL that takes more than 17 hr. to complete.
