Discount air travel company NewLeaf will offer a modest program of charter flights to the sun beginning in January.
The company, which operates in partnership with Flair Airlines, will offer three weekly flights from YYC to AZA, about 30 km from Phoenix, from 19JAN to the end of April. Weekly service from YEG will begin 21JAN.
NewLeaf will also offer weekly Sunday flights from YHM to Florida’s MLB, about an hour’s drive from Orlando, beginning 15JAN.
"Every time we expand our schedule, we prove the 'experts' wrong, and we are quite happy about that," said President and CEO Jim Young in a release.
WestJet recently announced a surge in capacity for YHM next year, which is being seen as a preemptive strike against NewLeaf. PD also flies to MLB on a seasonal basis from Toronto’s YTZ.
NewLeaf could also soon face new competition in the discount travel market. The federal government recently exempted two aspiring ultra-low-cost airlines, Canada Jetlines Ltd. and Enerjet, from the country’s foreign-ownership rules. Jetlines has said it plans to launch by summer 2017.
NewLeaf does not compensate travel agents who book clients with the carrier.
