Canadian Tour Ops Say Little Reaction To Playa Shooting
Blue Parrot Club
Open Jaw spoke with senior representatives of major tour operators to gauge consumer reaction to the multiple shooting at a nightclub in Playa del Carmen, where a Canadian was among the 5 people killed. The consensus: there has been little reaction.
“I think there is a definite segment of people who will not travel to Mexico, but this will just reinforce their feeling,” says Andrew Dawson, COO, Sunwing Travel Group.
“A lot will depend on the actual motive – whether it was a random act of a disgruntled thug or a targeted ‘message,’ and how it is handled. Those that like Mexico or are neutral will (providing it's the former reason above), just chalk this down to an horrifically growing list of random slayings that could happen anywhere.”
Denise Heffron, VP National Sales & Commercial for Transat, called the shootings “really horrifying.” But she also reports little impact.
”Our business operations are as normal. We have had some calls into the call centre from agents inquiring about safety in Playa. But what's to say really -- clearly we viewing this as an isolated incident.”
Nino Montagnese, Managing Director, Sun Markets for ACV, says the operator has seen “no reaction from customers at all.”
Dave Cecco, Director of Product at WestJet Vacations, echoed other respondents when he said the incident “hit a bit close to home as we often frequent The Blue Parrot when we are on vacation with the family.”
But he added that in terms of consumer reaction “there’s nothing I am aware of yet, thankfully.”
