A veteran of nearly 50 years in the Canadian travel industry, Daryl McWilliams passed away yesterday in Toronto.

The familiar industry figure was V.P. Sales & Marketing at Sunwing Vacations at the time of his death. His long and distinguished career began with a role as a tour escort for Suntours. He also worked with Sunflight and Skylark before becoming a founder of Paramount Holidays. He later co-founded Encore Cruises with Vanessa Lee, his spouse at the time.

McWilliams also served the Canadian travel industry in a variety of association roles. At the time of his death he was Vice Chair of the TICO Board of Directors and Chair of TICO’s Business Strategy Committee. He also served on TICO’s Executive Committee, Legislative & Regulatory Review Committee and TICO’s Education Standards Committee. Daryl was also CATO Chairman.

TICO’s V.P. Operations Dorian Werda told Open Jaw, “We still can’t believe it…. Daryl was a pleasure and I feel so fortunate to have had the opportunity to get to know him and work with him. His contributions were invaluable and he was always enthusiastic about his work here at TICO – and of course he had a wonderful sense of humour. He was highly regarded and respected and he will be greatly missed.”

Current business colleague Andrew Dawson, COO of the Sunwing Travel Group told Open Jaw, “Daryl had been sick for a couple of months and was recently admitted into Toronto Western so we knew he was ill. But his passing was still a big shock and very saddening to all his friends and colleagues at Sunwing Travel Group. He will be sadly missed.”
