Sunwing Airlines is adding a service charge of $26.25, taxes in, per direction, for the 1st checked bag on domestic services and flights to the U.S.

Pax can save a few dollars by prepaying up to 48 hr. in advance for $21.00. The new policy is now in effect.

For the fee, pax will be able to check a bag weighing up to 23 kg (50 lbs). The current free checked bag can only weigh up to 20 kg (44 lbs).

As well, effective for new bookings departing 05JAN onwards, the inflight service on domestic and U.S. routes will become a buy on board menu with a selection of meal, snack and beverage options.

In some good news, on all services to Mexico, the Caribbean and Central America, along with Florida cruise packages, Sunwing Airlines is increasing its complimentary checked baggage allowance per passenger from 20 kg (44 lbs) to 23 kg (50 lbs) for travel as of 01NOV. The enhanced 23 kg baggage allowance applies to the 1st piece of checked luggage only.

The airline also says it has simplified its excess baggage policy by introducing a flat fee for overweight and oversize items, rather than the current sliding scale.

For the 1st time, Sunwing will also allow pax to check a 2nd bag, if desired, for a fee of $36.75 (or $31.50 if prepaid up to 48 hr. in advance) per direction, including all taxes.

“We believe that this increase in our complimentary checked baggage allowance is great news for customers as it allows them extra flexibility when packing for their vacation,” says Sunwing Airlines President Mark Williams. “Our experience tells us that the majority of travellers do prefer the convenience of travelling with just one suitcase, so increasing the complimentary checked baggage allowance for the 1st checked piece of luggage is sure to be popular with our passengers, especially for families travelling with young children who often have more to pack.”
