At Tianguis – The Show Must Go On

The chaotic pace and promotional hurly-burly of the annual Tianguis Turistico has been in full swing despite Mexico being in the eye of the swine flu storm. Here in the Acapulco Convention Centre, things are progressing as per usual -  even Tuesday’s 5.6 Richter scale earthquake barely created a blip in the activity level.

Only a handful of people are wearing masks. We slather on hand sanitizer and  have become even more diligent, frequent hand washers. The cheek kissing and handshaking goes on. However, coughing definitely draws “dirty looks” reports one vivacious young Canadian.

“I do not feel in any jeopardy here in Acapulco,” says itravel2000’s Eddie Carroll.

But, I have to admit that I am not quite as comfortable about the prospects of spending four hours at MEX for my connection home to YYC. The itravel2000 folks are checking into options for me that would wing me out of here on a different routing. But, flight loads are heavy with Tianguis wrapping up and more people departing than arriving.

Toronto’s Luis Garfias, CEO of GoSeeMexico.com, is not at all nervous about flying through Mexico City. He says he will take all hand sanitizing precautions, but will not don the surgical mask or latex gloves airlines are offering.
