Mexico Flies High At Harbourfront
Mexico proudly flew its colours over Toronto for 3 days recently at Harbourfront Centre. The event was a super-sized fiesta celebrating the 200th anniversary of Mexican independence under the banner Mexico: Beyond Your Expectations - a cultural and musical festival.
Mexican bands Café Tacuba (Grammy award-winning), Los de Abajo (playing at the Montreal Jazz Festival 2009), and Chikita Violenta rocked Harbourfront to its core. According to the organizers, this festival was the best attended of the "World Route 2009 series".
One of the highlights of the event was a tribute to the colourful El Santo, one of Mexico’s most famous and iconic wrestlers aka luchadores. In honour of the 25th anniversary of his death, a live outdoor Lucha Libre wrestling match was held. Wrestlers Blue Demon Jr., Incognito, Superxtremo, Cody, Sombra, and Tigerstar battled tirelessly in signature masks. The crowd roared.
The festival also featured Mexican movies such as the Santo y Blue Demon vs. Los Monstruos, but also Santo y Blue Demon in La Atlántida. Mexico's flavourful culinary scene was not left out. Authentic and contemporary Mexican cuisine was served - prepared by Toronto’s restaurants La Tortilleria, Frida, and the World Café.
According to one participant in the event, “The festival made all of us Mexicans living in Toronto remember how special and unique our culture is."
Indeed, Mexico has a lot to offer and Tourism Board Director Alfonso Sumano was beaming at the opportunity for such a successful showcase.
