Dutch Treat: St. Martin Shows Off Its Fashionable Side
The cavernous Six Degrees night club in midtown T.O. was the venue of an imaginative travel-meets-fashion evening recently when Dutch St. Martin teamed with fashion experts and fab models to showcase SXM not just as a beach destination but as a new hub of fashion in the Caribbean.
As bathing-suited models posed and stylish fashion mavens offered interviews to TV cameras, the word got out: St. Martin, with its thousands of cruise passengers each year, has a ready-made market for its fashion wares. And it’s becoming something of a hub for designers from around the Caribbean.
With 350 restaurants and over 100 nationalities residing there, the island is also incredibly cosmopolitan, something it’s trying to convey to a new tourism target in North America: the hip, urban black.
All of which will be highlighted during its second annual Fashion Week, taking place August 23 to 30.
Even Susan Melnyk, Dutch St. Martin’s media executive here in YYZ, confesses she travels down with a second empty suitcase: “Great selection, different styles – and not necessarily expensive.”
