Cheers Ring On WestJet’s Bahamas Inaugural

The “little” airline that could, from my hometown, just did it again – launching twice weekly, nonstop, seasonal service from Calgary to Nassau, Bahamas.

Not surprisingly, the folks who brought F-U-N to the Canadian skies went all out for the inaugural flight aided by three beaming officials from Toronto’s Bahamas Tourist Office.

In the gaily-decorated departure lounge, guests enjoyed complimentary Timmy’s coffee and goodies as Richard Bartrem, WestJet’s charismatic V.P., culture & communications, took the mike in welcome.

Clutching WS goodie bags, the vibe boarding flight 1170 was palpable. “Is everyone excited?” Captain John inquired. Flight attendant Mel quipped, “The floor lighting will become illuminated in the event of a flight attendant fashion show today.” On cue, the FA’s modeled a “Launch Crew” t-shirt, the back emblazoned with inaugurals of eight new sun destinations, all launching by Jan. 13th.

To toast this first winter season launch, adults raised a bubbly mimosa, kids a ginger ale and OJ. Introducing the Bahamas tourist folks, Richard encouraged guests to chat with these island experts.

Later, the cabin erupted in chaos as guests played games to win prizes from WS, Bahamas tourism and Majestic Tours, WestJet Vacations’ ground op.

On touching down at Lynden Pindling, robust applause rang for the captain, crew and ceremonial fire trucks’ water cannon salute. But the best was still to come.

With the pomp and circumstance the Caribbean does best, deplaning guests were met by the extraordinary Royal Bahamas Police Force band parading at the foot of the stairs. VIP’s (including yours truly) were received by Bahamas tourism dignitaries, including Neko Grant, Minister of Tourism & Aviation.

What a welcome, Bahamas! This inaugural will be tough to outdo.
