Canadian Hitchhiking Robot Returns Home With Lufthansa
Lufthansa flight attendant with hitchBOT
Canada's beloved hitchhiking robot - hitchBOT - that travelled more than 6,000 km from Halifax, Nova Scotia to Victoria, British Columbia last summer has concluded its 2nd trip in Germany.
The 9-day trek began and ended in Munich with updates provided on Twitter, Facebook and Instagram. The robot had the opportunity to ride in a parade float during Carnival in Cologne and served as a special guest at Social Media Week in Hamburg. hitchBOT returned home to Toronto via Lufthansa.
Its designers - students and researchers from Ryerson and McMaster University - even updated hitchBOT's software so that it would be able to communicate in German.
Once people pick it up, the robot is programmed to explain itself, ask to be plugged in for a battery recharge and offer information about the region its in through Wi-Fi. It also has a built-in GPS system.
