Uniglobe Travel Eastern Canada Golf Tournament Puts Spotlight On Juvenile Diabetes
Uniglobe Travel Eastern Canada raised $11,250 for the Juvenile Diabetes Research Foundation at its annual Charity Golf Tournament held last week at the Carrying Place Golf & Country Club north of Toronto.
The tournament, a staple of the September Ontario travel industry calendar for 25 years, is close to the heart of driving force Sonia McKeon, Uniglobe Travel Eastern Canada’s Director of Marketing.
“We support the JDRF because I have two children with Type 1 diabetes,” says McKeon. “Both my kids were diagnosed when they were 7 years old, they are now 20 & 22. The hardest thing I’ve ever done in my life when they were diagnosed was to hold them down and jab them 4-5 times a day with the insulin needles.”
McKeon says technology for the delivery of insulin has come a long way since her children were diagnosed, but points out that insulin is not a cure, it’s a band-aid.
“As my kids are older, it’s still a constant worry, this is a 24/7 disease that they must stay on top of constantly. Everything effects their blood sugar levels, what they eat, what they drink, exercise, sports, etc. It’s a constant battle!”
Diabetes is the leading cause of amputations, blindness, kidney and heart disease, and other debilitating conditions, and every dollar raised at the tournament goes towards the search for a cure.
This year’s winning team was from Collette, including newly appointed Head of Sales Canada George Christakis, Shane Coupland, Atlantic Sales Manager, and Todd Bridges, VP of Business Development & Partnerships.
Most Honest team was the group including Federico Berardinucci, Manager, National Sales at Air Canada Vacations, Juan Contreras Aragon, Area Sales Manager, ACV, Paul Poulin, Client Manager, Manulife and Eric Forrest of Uniglobe Kemp Travel.
The tournament attracted plenty of sponsors from the travel industry.
