Open Jaw Discovers Cuba During FITCuba 2019

Cuba’s beaches are known and loved for their exceptional quality, but when visitors want more than just sand and sun, this destination can certainly deliver. Take Viñales, a town of approximately 30,000 inhabitants in western Cuba, about 180km from Havana. The region makes a great day-trip from Havana, but its small-scale hotels are also the perfect accommodations to discover the “Cuba Auténtica” over several days. Here are a few cultural and historical activities that Open Jaw discovered on a day trip in Viñales during FITCuba 2019.

Downtown lunch – The main avenue in  Viñales  is dotted with souvenir shops
and trendy restaurants serving local cuisine.

See the peaks – a stop at the Mirador Los Jazmines has a spectacular
lookout gazing out over the lush mountains of the Sierra de los Organos,
one of Cuba’s three mountain ranges.

Check out a neo-cave art – A gigantic mural of Guanahatabeyes Indians,
animals and mollusks adorns a 120 metre by 160 metre-high slab of rock in
the valley of Dos Hermanas. Painted by a student of Mexican artist
Diego Rivera, Leovigildo González Morillo, the artwork took four
years to complete.

Explore a cave – The Cueva del Indio – Indian Cave -- was once a haven for slaves
escaping plantations and Indigenous peoples hiding from the Spaniards.

Follow the tobacco route – Visit a tobacco farm to see how the leaves are
harvested, dried and then rolled to make Cuba’s famous cigars.
