FAM Follies

OJ ON LOCATION: GTA Agents Get On Island Time At Ft. Myers & Sanibel FAM

A short three-hour flight out of YYZ, and eight GTA agents were digging their toes in the sand and resetting their clocks to island time in The Beaches of Fort Myers and Sanibel.

Many Canadians know and love the liveliness of Miami or sophistication of Fort Lauderdale, but the five-day FAM, led by Jeanette Faria, Sales Director with the Lee County Visitor & Convention Bureau, will introduce agents to the more laid-back, down-to-earth west coast of The Sunshine State.

L-R: Travel advisors Sheryll Donovan, Northstar Travel; Lori Anne Westenbrink,
CAA South Central Ontario; and Elly Raftis, CAA South Central Ontario with OJ’s Tina.

The group will head out on the water to explore some of the 100 barrier islands by boat, seeing attractions such as the Edison & Ford Winter Estates, savouring the local fare and viewing several properties.

“I really want to show the agents what the area has to offer and what sets it apart from the rest of Florida,” Faria tells Open Jaw.

“With 11 flights a week from Toronto on WestJet and 4 flights a day on Air Canada this winter, we have amazing air service and I really want it to become a destination agents feel comfortable selling to their clients. We have a lot of snowbirds that have homes in the area but we have amazing hotels as well.”

The first stops on the itinerary were the waterfront Sanibel Inn and Song of the Sea – two sister properties under the Inns of Sanibel umbrella that offer condo-style accommodations with kitchenettes or full kitchens. Quite appropriate for Sanibel, the destination that calls itself the “Seashell Capital of the World,” Sanibel Inn has a dedicated shell-washing station where guests can rinse off the molluscs that caught their eye on the beach.

Next, we headed to dinner at the Mucky Duck Neighborhood Pub, a local hotspot with front row seats to watch the sunset. Our waitress tells us that between the end of December and May, the wait times for a table can go up to three hours!
