Silversea’s Remarkable Lineup Of ‘Tale Tellers’ For World Cruise 2019

Pico Iyer

Paul Theroux

One hundred and thirty-three days, fifty-three ports, 31 countries -- and nine amazing storytellers.

Those are some of the compelling statistics of the ‘Tale of Tales World Cruise 2019’ aboard Silversea Cruises’ Silver Whisper.

The destinations, excursions and experiences are amazing, but what grabbed this literary travel lover is the lineup of ‘Tale Tellers’ who will each join a segment of the voyage and illustrate their experience artistically, forming a unique commemorative anthology -- the ‘Tale of Tales’ -- for Silversea guests. They will also host a series of onboard lectures.

While I admit I may have giggled in the past while reading about knitting, scrapbooking and KISS fan themed cruises, seeing the lineup of literary lights on the Silversea world cruise got me right in my personal geek spot.

Two of them – Paul Theroux and Pico Iyer – are among my favourite authors. I’ve travelled to several continents and many countries with them, thrilling to their experiences and insights about a world I can never get enough of.

Other previously announced artistic guests include Steve McCurry, an iconic voice in contemporary photography; Alain de Botton, philosopher, TED speaker, Co-Founder of the School of Life and member of the Royal Society of Literature; and Sophy Roberts, award-winning writer with specialisms in remote travel, conservation, and cultural preservation.

And Silversea just completed the lineup with the announcement of four new names: Saroo Brierley, Harold Koda, Jeremiah Tower and Tahir Shah.

Brierley’s extraordinary childhood experience was released as the Hollywood blockbuster Lion in 2016; Koda, the author of 20 books, is best celebrated as the former Curator in Charge of The Costume Institute at The Metropolitan Museum of Art in New York; Jeremiah Tower is a world-renowned chef and restauranteur, famed for inspiring modern California cuisine at Chez Panisse; and Tahir Shah is a British author based in Morocco and best known for his unusual and often hazardous expeditions, chronicled in over 20 books on travel and exploration.

Ahead of the World Cruise 2019, Silver Whisper will undergo extensive refurbishments in December 2018, meaning guests will enjoy enhanced comfort for the Tale of Tales voyage.

“We are extremely proud to offer such a rich line-up of creatives for our guests on the World Cruise 2019,” says Barbara Muckermann, Chief Marketing Officer for Silversea Cruises. “We are sure that their stimulating lectures and the Tale of Tales anthology will enrich the experience enormously for our valued guests. We are continuously seeking ways to unlock unique experiences for travellers; our nine Tale Tellers will ensure that the beauty of these unique experiences is best captured.”

In addition to a wide range of land tours, a selection of exclusive enrichments will embellish the World Cruise 2019, including a tour of the famous prison that housed Nelson Mandela and a private opening of the spectacular Guggenheim Museum in Bilbao. Guests will also receive a range of destination-related gifts.

Early booking fares for Silversea’s World Cruise 2019 start from $81,491 per guest for the complete voyage. Guests can also book each of the voyage’s nine segments individually; the fare for each segment varies.
