Cruise Rivals RCCL & NCL Join Forces On Health Protocols

Cruise Week

Royal Caribbean Group and Norwegian Cruise Line Holdings are collaborating to develop enhanced cruise health and safety standards in response to the global COVID-19 pandemic, CruiseWeek reports.

Noticeably, Carnival Corp. is not part of the team.

Observers tell Cruise Week it is stunning that the two companies that have fought bitterly over brand acquisitions in the past are now joining forces. However, it's a recognition of the importance in doing business differently to deal with the current health crisis.

The newly formed group, called the Healthy Sail Panel, is led by former U.S. Food and Drug Administration Commissioner Scott Gottlieb and former U.S. Health Secretary Mike Leavitt. The panel is tasked with collaboratively developing recommendations for cruise lines to advance their public health response to COVID-19, improve safety, and achieve readiness for the safe resumption of operations, according to a joint statement by Royal Caribbean and Norwegian.

The panel is expected to offer its initial recommendations by the end of AUG.
