Carnival's Switch From Coke to Pepsi Sparks Online Debate

When it comes to sugary pop drinks, some people know what they like and they aren't settling for anything else.

So when Carnival Cruise Line’s brand ambassador John Heald first told his Facebook followers that the fleet would be switching from serving Coke products to Pepsi, it's no surprise the post got thousands of comments and conversations got a bit fizzed up.

The pro-Coke factions were appalled, the pro-Pepsi peeps were thrilled, and others didn't much care at all.

"I am beyond thrilled. I have put up with drinking Coke products for many, many cruises. I always brought my Pepsi and Mountain Dew with me. I detest the taste of Diet Coke. So happy it’s our turn for flavour," commented Linda Treece Cyrier on Facebook.

"I don’t care what you serve to drink, either Coke or Pepsi. I’m on vacation and not at work. I don’t book a vacation due to what drinks are served. I’m excited cause I am on a boat," wrote Holly Baggett.

Some outspoken pro-Cokers even vowed to switch to a line serving their preferred beverage.

"Time for me to start booking Princess again. Will not drink Pepsi and I’m Diamond on Carnival. Very disappointed," posted Judy Comella on Facebook.

On 10JAN, Heald posted an update that the fleetwide conversion to Pepsi beverages is "moving along quickly" and that all North American-based ships will be exclusively serving Pepsi-owned products by 16JAN.

Carnival’s flip to Pepsi products was surely not a snap decision and those that pull the soda strings likely anticipated some crestfallen cruisers. But at the end of the day, the taste buds want what the taste buds want, and it'll be interesting to see how many of those threatening to desert to the competition will actually follow through.
