G Adventures
Day 4

by Tina the Travel Agent

You could say that trekking to Everest Base Camp takes you well beyond your limits… But along the way you’ll witness some of the most mindbogglingly beautiful sights on Earth. Here are some of my personal highlights…

Sir Edmund Hillary

Lukla & Phakding

The legendary mountain flight into Lukla is spectacular and the landing marks an exciting start to your trek, because one end of the runway is 60 metres higher than the other. There you’ll meet up with your Sherpa guides and porters before trekking along the Dudh Kosi river.

Namche Bazaar

You’ll spend some time acclimatizing to the altitude in Namche Bazaar, where you can do some short day-treks to the surrounding villages of Thame and Khumjung. Keep your eyes open, because this is your first opportunity to catch a glimpse of the peak of awesome Mount Everest.

Namche Bazaar to Tengboche

This unbelievably beautiful route winds through woods and rhododendron forests. The Dudh Kosi is far below you as Thamserku, Kantega, Ama Dablam, Lhotse and Everest rise up in front. The occasional mani wall – a wall composed of intricately carved stone tablets -- makes this a lovely walk.

Tengboche to Dingboche

Stone steps lead down through rhododendrons, birches and conifers where, due to the hunting ban, almost-tame pheasants come to greet you. Rising above the tree line, the trail enters alpine meadows of scrub juniper and, if you’re lucky enough to be there in the summer, a profusion of wild flowers.

Nagarzhang Peak

During an acclimatization day at Dingboche, you can hike up to Nagarzhang Peak, a small summer settlement where you’ll be rewarded with stunning views of Island Peak, Lhotse, Ama Dablam and the fluted ice walls flanking the Amphu Lapcha pass.

Sunset Over Nuptse

After hiking along the Khumbu Glacier and seeing the monuments to Sherpas and climbers, you’ll reach Lobuche, which has spectacular views of Nuptse. This is an incredible place to watch the sunset from an elevation of 4,900 metres.

Base Camp

Following a challenging climb past the Khumbu Glacier, you’ll arrive in Nuptse and cross the Changri Glacier to Gorakshep. Then you’ll enjoy the euphoria of reaching Everest Base Camp at an elevation of 5,184 metres. Warning: There will be tears, but they’ll be tears of joy. Or maybe relief!

Join Tina tomorrow when she reflects on her personal feelings about the trek to Everest Base Camp.
