Dogfight: WS Follows NewLeaf Into AZA From YYC & YEG

Open Jaw

Just a day after Open Jaw ran this story announcing winter NewLeaf flights from Calgary and Edmonton to Phoenix-Mesa Gateway Airport, WestJet followed suit, announcing its own -- almost identical -- program.

WS will begin serving AZA three times weekly from YYC on 19JAN, 2017 and once weekly from YEG beginning 21JAN – the exact same dates and frequency as the NewLeaf schedule.

"We have provided hundreds of thousands of our guests with non-stop service between Canada and Phoenix since 2004, and now look forward to bringing low fares and our signature brand of caring, friendly service to our second destination in Arizona," said Bob Cummings, WestJet Executive Vice-President, Commercial.

When NewLeaf made its announcement about winter flights – which also include weekly Sunday flights from YHM to Florida’s MLB – President and CEO Jim Young had this to say:

"Every time we expand our schedule, we prove the 'experts' wrong, and we are quite happy about that."

NewLeaf initially said that a plan to compensate travel agents for ticket sales was in the works, but has since indicated that with its ultra-low-cost model it prefers to pass savings on to customers.
