The president of the Dominican Republic was on hand for a ceremony marking the commencement of construction on the Royalton Bavaro, from Sunwing Travel-owned Blue Diamond Resorts.

The property is scheduled to open for the 2017/2018 winter season.

"We look forward to building on our presence in Punta Cana with Royalton Bavaro and enjoy the success we've shared at CHIC, Memories Splash and Royalton Punta Cana, said Jordi Pelfort, Blue Diamond Managing Director.

"Bavaro Beach was recently hailed as one of the best beaches in the world by TripAdvisor and we couldn't be happier to bring guests another award-winning vacation experience here."

The 730-room Royalton Bavaro will be the first Royalton Luxury Resort to be constructed from the ground-up in the Dominican Republic.

In each suite, guests will find standard features including ceiling-mounted rain showers, two-person soaker tubs and handcrafted signature DreamBed mattresses.

As well as a Royal Spa and a sprawling lazy river, there will be nine restaurants ranging from a beach buffet to teppanyaki restaurant Zen and the Hunter Steakhouse.
