“The New WestJet” Launches At YYC With Trio Of Announcements

It was a big day for WestJet yesterday in its hometown of Calgary, as the airline made a trio of announcements: a brand refresh and new advertising campaign; the first three international routes using Boeing 787 Dreamliners – with YYC as the base; and a new ‘Platinum’ tier for the WestJet Rewards program.

"Today's announcement marks a pivotal time for WestJet," said Ed Sims, WestJet President and CEO. "Love Where You’re Going embodies both the thrill of travel and the sheer ambition we at WestJet have for our airline."
The hometown audience was happy to hear that WS will base its first three 787 Dreamliners in Calgary, offering three-class international flights to Dublin, Paris and London Gatwick beginning in spring 2019. The flights will launch on 28APR, 17MAY and 1JUN, 2019 respectively.
Sims said WestJet’s decision to establish Calgary as a hub for its Dreamliner fleet is a “huge vote of confidence in the local economy and in the airport.” But it’s one the community deserves as part of a strong “symbiotic relationship” between the airline and its home, he added.
“WestJet is not made in Alberta, it’s made of Alberta. We’ve never forgotten our roots or the support of Albertans.”
He sees a strong business case too: “Calgary is considerably underserved in the wide-body international market.”
Sims anticipates a strong market in both directions with the YYC flights. “Our guests already love these destinations. And the 787 is an absolute game-changer.”
Finally, as part of the new WestJet, Sims also announced that WestJet Rewards will introduce anew Platinum tier, making it easier for members to get more value from the frequent flyer program as the airline heads global.
The change is also a tacit acknowledgement that Aeroplan is one of Air Canada’s competitive advantages. Another is AC’s membership in Star Alliance, which enables the accumulation of rewards for Aeroplan members flying on partner carriers.
