Agents Upset As WestJet Vacations Adds Bag Fee On Sun Packages

Bruce Parkinson, Open Jaw

Clients of WestJet Vacations will have to pay a fee for checked bags on Sun routes for departures 3DEC and beyond.

Ranging in price from $30-$35.40, the fee is consistent with that charged on first bags on U.S. and Canada WestJet Vacations packages.

In announcing the new fee, WestJet said “changing our bag fees will offset higher costs in today’s challenging and competitive market, while continuing to offer competitive pricing for our guests.”

Travellers wishing to escape the fee will have to upgrade to Premium fares or travel with the WestJet RBC Mastercard.

Some agents are clearly upset by the change. One anonymous commenter to Open Jaw expressed their dissatisfaction this way:

“Believe me, agents are MAD. Facebook agent groups have lots of discussion and we are emailing our WS BDMs and our consortia. We’re selling away from WS hoping they hear us and other tour operators see an increase in bookings so they don’t follow suit.”

Competitive pricing .... definitely not competitive when the fee for a family is an additional $240 on the low end. Will be moving business towards other TO's.

Sunquest Vacations through Travelbrands continues to offer the 1st checked bag free on packages to Mexico and the Caribbean with Wesjet flights...take THAT Westjet Vacations! Guess who we'll be booking with!

I definitely will NOT be selling Westjet Vacations! They will be a last resort option and I will try and talk any & all clients out of booking with Westjet Vacations.

We are definitely looking at other suppliers who are not going into the nickle and dime our clients. We hought it would be so great to have 2 direct flight with WS to MBJ from Calgary this winter but not using them now,.

I am not giving WS vacations option to my clients because of this.....
Hopefully the other tour operators will not do the same.......
I would ask other agents to do the same......boycott WS vacations...
