A Message From Travel Agents To The Canadian Government

Flight Centre Travel Group’s Corporate Traveller Canada has posted a video on YouTube titled #webroughtyouhome. The video makes a strong case that travel advisors should be included in any relief package for the overall industry.

“This message is from travel agents to the Canadian government,” says Chris Lynes, SVP Corporate Brands, Flight Centre Travel Group Canada.

“The coronavirus has unfortunately had a detrimental impact on our business and industry, and as such, travel agents should be included in any government relief package that’s offered to the industry. We’re the ones bringing Canadians home and this is the time to act to help us.”

Tanya LePage, VP Operations at Corporate Traveller Canada added: “The last two weeks alone we’ve seen thousands of Canadian travellers brought back safely to Canada by our agents. Some of them didn’t even book with us. We’ve brought back groups stuck in Morocco and Peru, families stuck in Ecuador and thousands more.”

The powerful video includes a series of agents recounting their efforts to bring back clients, from 15 miners in Guyana to Canadian exchange students in Spain.

An unnamed agent in the video states: “We’ve helped get people a way home, even when it seemed that there was no way out. Our clients are thankful, the industry is thankful, and we will be ready to help people get moving again when this is all over. Please consider us.”

An agency client states: “I’m so indebted to our travel agent, as I’m sure thousands and thousands of other Canadians are. I would certainly hope that our government and our country can provide assistance to this group of dedicated people helping other Canadians.”

I am independent and have done my job to manage clients in changing, cancelling, refunding...all for no pay. When the dust settles and we have to go back to rebooking all of the future travel credits, we will be doing that for nothing. Income...zero.

For the past 2 weeks alone, we have worked up to 12 hours per day to get people home. We commissioned agents to not get paid for canceled bookings and refunds. The last 2 weeks has brought me approximately $50 in revenue. We have been completely devastated along with the airlines.

We as travel agents are devoted to our responsibilities of protecting and saving peoples in all levels of travel . We are working diligently and assisting people that have travelled far and domestic, working from morning to night to get people home , changing flights , protecting people’s monies with consolidators , spending numerous hours on hold even days to get through . And at the same time not acquiring money’s , dealing with commission recalls and the real possibility of not paying our bills . Travel agents , have been working around the clock in this pandemic and should be acknowledged and protected by our government financially please.

We are the front line, when it comes to bringing back our customers, families and friends. We were there for those that could not reach the airlines, the tour operators abroad! We are a devoted group of poeple helping poeple travel in good and in bad times. Help us now, it is our turn to plea for help. Save our jobs, save our businesses!

travel agency and agents are working around the clock with commission recall and not much support from airlines. Still worrying about reissue or refund using the wrong code and get debit memo from airlines... Please consider us as a travel agent get support from our Canadian Government.
We had no new business ( no income ) for more than a month or more, but recalled commission from all previous business within last year sales.
We cannot survive any longer. What should we do for our rent and payroll in Mar and further.

It should also be noted that there are many travel agents that work as independent agents. We work entirely based on commission.
