Canadians Can Now Bypass Hawaii Quarantine With Pre-Flight COVID-19 Test

Canadians craving some Aloha Spirit and beach therapy can visit Hawaii this winter without having to quarantine for two weeks upon arrival - on one condition. Hawaii governor David Ige announced a new testing program on Thursday that, starting 24NOV, will permit Canadian travellers who receive a negative coronavirus test result within 72 hours of their scheduled flight to bypass the isolation requirements.

Travellers need to present their negative test result prior to boarding. If test results are not available before boarding the final leg of the trip, the traveller must quarantine for 14 days or the length of the stay, whichever is shorter.

"Many Canadians love to visit Hawaii during the winter months to escape the cold weather, so the timing for this works well," said Governor Ige.

All visitors to Hawaii must register prior to travel. The state's entrance requirements can be found here.

WestJet Offers Pre-Flight Testing For Hawaii Travel

At the same time as Ige's announcement, WestJet also announced it's offering a pre-flight COVID-19 test for passengers travelling to the islands. The test costs CA$150 per person and, although open to all Canadian residents, is currently only available in Alberta.

From 16DEC to 04JAN, WestJet offers the following services to Hawaii:

  • YVR-OGG, three times weekly
  • YVR-HNL, three times weekly
  • YYC-OGG, twice weekly
  • YYC-HNL, once a week

"Safety remains our number one priority and we thank Governor Ige and the State of Hawaii for providing this opportunity for Canadians to enjoy all that the islands have to offer while safely supporting the tourism industry. WestJet's teams are working hard to rebuild confidence in air travel through important partnerships like this one with Hawaii's Trusted Travel Partner program and DynaLIFE," said Arved von zur Muehlen, WestJet Chief Commercial Officer.

In its own statement, Air Canada welcomed Hawaii's announcement that Canadians can bypass the state's mandatory 14-day quarantine via a pre-travel testing process, and announced its new Hawaii winter schedule.

Air Canada's Hawaii schedule includes:

  • YVR-OGG begins 17DEC, four weekly flights
  • YVR-HNL begins on 17DEC, three weekly flights
  • YYC-OGG begins 18DEC

"We applaud Governor Ige's announcement that Hawaii's science-based, pre-travel testing initiative is now available for Canadians to be exempt from mandatory quarantine requirements on arrival in Hawaii, and we are very pleased Air Canada is a preferred airline in Hawaii's Safe Travels Program," said Timothy Liu, Managing Director, Sales Planning at Air Canada.

Passengers flying to Hawaii with AC are responsible for procuring their own COVID-19 test results 72 hours before departure.
