With Canada joining the growing list of countries requiring COVID-19 tests upon arrival, Cuba has wasted little time getting ahead of the curve by announcing Thursday that the country has rolled out a PCR testing program at the resorts in Varadero, Cayo Coco, Cayo Santa Maria and Holguin. The test costs US$30 per person and is payable by credit or debit card only.
The announcement comes just asCanada's new COVID-19 testing requirement kicks in. Starting 07JAN, all travellers five years and older must obtain a negative COVID-19 PCR test 72 hours before their return flight to Canada.
"Clients staying at hotels in these destinations can have peace of mind that the test is done right at their hotels," says Lessner Gomez, Director of the Cuba Tourist Board in Toronto.
“Guests will be advised upon arrival during the welcoming briefing about all the details on how to get tested and how to arrange the appointment through the doctor at each hotel. For clients staying in private homes, they can get tested at all international clinics in Cuba, which are located throughout the country.”
Visitors to Cuba need to provide their passport, tourist card and proof of COVID-19 insurance which, in most cases, is included in the holiday package. If they do not have COVID coverage on-arrival, it must be purchased at the airport in Cuba for US$30. Visitors receive a PCR test upon arrival at the airport in Cuba.
“Cuba has a world-class health system and the highest doctor/patient ratio in the world -- three times more than Canada. We are totally ready to accommodate increased testing," says Gomez.
