Air Canada Reports Record November Load Factor; WestJet Remains Flat

Air Canada’s continually increasing capacity continues to be absorbed by the market as they have just announced record load factor of 78.6% for the month of November on a 9.5% increase in capacity. On the additional capacity, system wide traffic for November increased 10.8%. Air Canada reports traffic results on a system-wide basis, including regional airlines from which Air Canada purchases capacity and Air Canada rouge.

"Air Canada generated greater traffic in all markets served, led by international and U.S. transborder markets. These consistently strong results achieved after the traditional peak summer travel season demonstrate the effectiveness of our commercial strategy focusing on international growth and the strategic deployment of Air Canada rouge. In particular, our expanding global network provides us with a lower risk, diversified route portfolio that more than offsets the current economic slowdown in Western Canada. I would like to thank our customers for choosing Air Canada as their preferred carrier and our employees for taking care of them while transporting them safely to their destination."

WestJet has also reported their November traffic results with a load factor of 78.6%, a decrease of 1.9 percentage points year over year on slightly lower capacity. Not a bad result for a traditionally weak travel period. The airline flew 1.5 million pax in November, approximately flat with the prior year, and achieved an on-time performance rate of 89.8%, an improvement of 13.5 percentage points year over year.

"While loads across much of our network were generally in line with very strong prior year performance, softness in certain southern and Alberta markets resulted in a modest system load factor decline," said WestJet President & CEO Gregg Saretsky. "With our busy holiday season approaching, I want to thank our more than 11,000 WestJetters for their continued dedication to safely providing our guests with WestJet's award-winning brand of friendly caring service."
