Mother’s Day At Open Jaw – Celebrating Jan Poon & Jodine Clement

Open Jaw

They got “into the business” at exactly the same time. Years later, this busy Barcelo & Occidental BDM finds she is sharing her mom with the whole of TPI!

Funny how fate can affect your life. Jodine Clement, Business Development Manager for Barcelo & Occidental in Western Canada, was a flight attendant with WestJet when an injured back curtailed her flying career. At the same time her mom Jan Poon, today an agent with TPI, had sold her giftware business and the 2 of them were looking for a fresh opportunity.

Enter TEAM, a U.S.-based agency looking for independent travel advisors, so they signed up in 2001. Shortly thereafter Jan went to TPI and Jodine went on to work on the tour operator side of the industry. She’s now been with Barcelo for 4 years.

“I once had an agent really upset with me because of the wholesale/retail relationship, so I’m very careful to say the only benefit my mother gets is that she has my home number!” says Jodine. “I once even turned her down for a FAM!”

That changed recently when the 2 did participate in a Barcelo FAM together – after all, Jan had booked a destination wedding with the hotel group. “Was it weird? A little. A lot of the TPI agents call her Mama Jan and it makes me so proud to hear that.

She works very long hours – throughout the night if need be – for her clients, she takes courses and attends seminars to improve her knowledge. She has her CTC and is an MCC:  and I love her to pieces!”

Do they talk shop at home? Yes, but not in front of the rest of the family.

She’s also loyal: Jodine says that throughout her career her mother has always done her best to support her with bookings. “She tells me whenever she makes a booking. ‘I’m trying!’ she says!”
