Day 1

Maeva! – Welcome!

How many of us can report that they have been invited on a trip to the south Pacific. It sounds too good to be true. But this Open Jaw reporter and my cartoon sidekick, Tina The Travel Agent, were recently treated to the ultimate trip to paradise – Tahiti!! A destination on everyone’s bucket list.

The trip started with the inaugural of French bee the new low-cost long-haul airline and subsidiary of the Dubreuil group. On May 11, the airline launched its first commercial flight between Paris-Orly Sud, San Francisco and Papeete in French Polynesia.

To mark the occasion, French bee in collaboration with Tahiti Tourisme extended an invitation to media, tour operators and agents from France, the US and Canada to experience the flight and spend a week exploring the South Pacific beauty of Tahiti and Moorea.

Unpacked and ready for a bit of rest before tomorrow's island tour.

San Francisco is where Tina and I joined the 326 pax, 3 pilots and 12 flight attendants for our journey above the South Pacific. It had been a lifetime since I last flew long-haul, so the thought of hunkering down for an 8.5-hour flight after the day it took getting to SFO was, I admit, daunting. No pity party for me though, especially from Tina my travel buddy for the week, we were after all en route to paradise.

The brand-new airbus A350-900 is equipped with the latest technology to make for a smooth flight. From cabin pressurization, temperature control, air quality and mood lighting, every detail has been designed to offer an optimal level of comfort. The promised result is improved sleep quality and reduced impact of jet lag for passengers. Is it true? Yes! I couldn’t believe how quiet the aircraft was, and after a movie, a meal and a few Zzz’s, we arrived just before sunrise at 4:40 am local time.

Check-in at SFO.

Settling in before takeoff.

Flying the friendly sky with the French bee flight staff.

A festive welcome at Papeete.

Let the festivities begin! What a tropical welcome it was. Each passenger was greeted with a warm smile, fragrant lei (called hei in Tahiti) and the cheerful inviting sounds of song and dance.

After impressive celebratory performances and speeches from tourism and airline executives, it was time to make our way to our accommodations.

Situated on the west side of the island, the four star Manava Suite Resort Tahiti offers 120 luxury rooms, including spacious garden suites and multi-bedroom duplex apartments, all designed with authentic Polynesian decor.

A perfect Polynesian sunset view overlooking the infinity pool at Manava Suite Resort Tahiti.
