The first Swooop flight out yesterday on YHM-YXX was 3.1 years old. That is an infant in industry terms. That said, not sure what is being implied by the writer’s letter above. As long as an aircraft is properly maintained they are safe. If the aircraft were older, lower lease or capital costs may benefit the ULCC need to keep non-fuel costs ultra low (though newer planes generally have lower fuel consumption).

As for the other letter on hidden fees and charges, those are already not included in mainline pricing (AC or WS for example). While the extra fees are higher in the ULCC environment than LCC, added to the very low base fares, passenger still often come out ahead. For many (though not all) of the fees, it is about choice for the passenger: cannot have your cake (ultra cheap fares) and eat it too (no fees or lower fees). And it is not about ULCCs nickel and diming pax, it is one of the methods used in the ULCC model to make money.

A footnote to the above paragraph: the Canadian Transportation Agency is currently in the process of examining the various components of the Airline Passenger Protection Regulations (APPR) since Bill C-49 came into law last month. One area the CTA is considering is if the inclusice all-in pricing regulations enacted in late 2012 (see the article and my quote in the Globe and Mail here: https://www.google.ca/amp/s/www.theglobeandmail.com/amp/globe-investor/new-ad-rules-mandate-all-in-pricing-for-airfares/article6507014/) should be revised in the current environment given many issues - including all of these a la carte ancillary fees.

How old are those planes , there as to be a catch somewhere, also it is the bags and seat selection that is the additional cost that are hidden.
